KIWANIS CLUB OF
SOUTH DENVER
PO BOX 101405
DENVER CO 80250-1405

OPENING: Don Haldi gave the invocation. Fred Greene gave the invocation.
GUESTS:
Garrett Adrian from the Circle K Club at Colorado University, Boulder. Tito Chaverri brought his wife Marjorie. Rachel Huskey brought her daughter Priscilla
ANNOUNCEMENTS:
  • Fred Greene reported we need more volunteers for our new K-Kids program at Knight Academy. The meeting will be Monday at 11:50 at the school on Exposition west of Colorado Boulevard. They will be divided into 3 groups, and we need at least one Kiwanian with each.
  • John Forney reported the Auto Rally committee will be meeting next Tuesday at 7 pm at Bernie Polak’s house, 5252 E Nassau Circle. John promised to call people on Monday to remind them of the meeting. Brian Keough reported on some sponsor money, but confided he would not be at the meeting because he would be “learning how to be a rock star”.
  • Debra Glade reported on Operation Christmas Child. With help from Courtney and Rachel they have 200 boxes wrapped and filled with another 100 yet to go. More help is still needed.

  • HAPPY DOLLARS:
  • Priscilla Huskey was happy that she has a new dog.
  • Dick Kem back from England, baulked at paying $50 for a haircut, and decided to return home shaggy.
  • Bernie Polak was happy that there are only 219 days until the next great Auto Rally.
  • Bill Eade has suffered through a period of “no electricity, no phone, and no TV” because of the recent storm.
  • Dallas Mauk gave a happy (?) dollar because we were back in “Nebraska”.
  • Ed Schenck was back from his recent cruise on the Queen Mary—while the cruise was great, it is always good to be home.
  • Courtney Cruise was happy to attend her first meeting as a member of SDK.
  • Debra Glade thanked Courtney and Rachel for their help on Operation Christmas Child.
  • Fred Greene was happy for all happy Kiwanians.
  • Rachel Huskey trying to coordinate a schedule to meet with the Prez and Secretary.
  • President Keith happy for Jon Farinholt, our program chair for the year.
  • Jon then urged the members to help in getting good programs for our future meetings.

  • Program: Wearing multiple hats today (Program chair, KOD, and speaker,) Jon Farinholt started by giving us some background on himself.

He was born in Montreal, but being a gentleman even then, he allowed his twin sister to come out first. Some years later he was majoring in Mechanical Engineering at Princeton and got a summer job in the emergency room of a Baltimore hospital. That changed the course of his life and he got his BA in Psychology and went on with his medical career, interning in Montreal. He was later at Johns Hopkins and now, many years later, he is a retired OB-GYN.

His talk today, though, was from the other side of the knife. He recounted his experiences with knee surgeries. The knee problems started with a Lacrosse injury while at Princeton. He had his second knee surgery in 1961 while in Medical School. More surgery came in 1981 in Denver, because there was no cartilage left in the knee. In 1998 he had knee replacement, where he was able to control his own sedation. (He did admit that doctors make lousy patients.) Since that surgery he has fallen on ice twice and managed to injure both the “good” and the artificial knee, bending them in directions not meant to go. Jon did admit that the medical profession has made great improvements in knee treatment. Debra pointed out that appropriately this is National Physical Therapy Month.

    PRIZE WINNER: Debra Glade
